| The combination of levees, canals and waterways has acted synergistically and resulted in the gradual loss of wetlands as a result of not only direct construction impacts, but also loss of freshwater inflow, intrusion of the gulf's salt water, and drainage/flooding of wetlands. These impacts have further been accelerated by geological subsidence and sea level rise. |
