Drawing of the West Bay Project

The Breaux Act West Bay Sediment Diversion Project is located on the west bank of the Mississippi river at mile 4.7 BHP, and would divert sediments into West Bay. The sediments and associated freshwater would create, nourish, and maintain about 10,000 acres of fresh to intermediate marsh over the 20-year life of the project. The project consists of a conveyance channel for a large scale uncontrolled diversion. The project is to be constructed in two phases to assure minimal impact on the navigation interest. Phase I is a 20,000 CFS opening. If monitoring shows that the project is successful, the opening would be enlarged to 50,000 CFS. Potential induced shoaling in an adjacent anchorage area was of concern; however, Breaux Act funds will be dedicated to maintain the area over the project life. A draft cost-sharing agreement was provided the state on March 5, 1997.
