LUMCON Estuarine Awareness and Discovery Camp
June 28-July 4, 2008
Apply to be one of the 2008 campers. This activity-filled, week-long, residential program is designed to enhance environmental awareness and stewardship in participants through in-depth scientific examination of estuarine environments and activities considering human relationships to local environments. It is an excellent opportunity for any high school student who is considering a career in marine or environmental science, as well as students who have set their sights in other directions, but who want to understand connections between the enormously productive south Louisiana wetlands and its inhabitants.
Campers approach the estuarine environment as scientists, asking questions and deciding how to address them in the laboratory and field. Using techniques developed for marsh and bay environments, such as plant & animal surveys, sediment coring, and standard water chemistry, campers enhance their understanding of estuarine functioning. Armed with new awareness of the ecosystem, campers investigate the threats to our coast, and steps that they can take as responsible stewards.
For students entering
grades 9th -12th
$200/student

WETSHOP 2008
Wetshop 2008 to be held by LDWF scheduled for June 16-20 in Galliano, LA
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) in partnership with the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program are sponsoring a week-long wetland workshop in June to train Louisiana teachers (both formal and informal) in Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, issues and history. During this intense workshop, educators experience research trawling, seining, fishing, water quality sampling, coastal botany, birding and presentations from experts in the fields of coastal restoration, invasive species, and oil and gas exploration. Forty professional contact hours are offered upon the successful completion of the science institute.
During WETSHOP 2007, seventeen educators representing 11 different parishes attended. The base of operation was the NRCS Plant Materials Center in Galliano, Louisiana which provided dormitory and cooking facilities for the workshop. Once trained, these WETSHOP veterans will return to their parishes and collectively train and equip teachers around the state with the knowledge and resources to conduct lessons on Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, issues and history in their classroom; an estimation of 40,000 Louisiana students will be impacted.
The WETSHOP has continued to provide teachers with up-to-date facts and experiences related to Louisiana’s coast, wetland values and functions and the history of our rich culture and geography since the Summer of 1993.
WETSHOP 2008 is scheduled to take place June 16 – 20, 2008. The base of operations will again be at the NRCS Plants Materials Center in Galliano, LA. Teachers that are interested in WETSHOP 2008 can contact Angela Capello, LDWF Biologist Supervisor, at: phone, (318) 748-6999 or email, acapello@wlf.louisiana.gov.
