COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 03-May-2024

Barataria Bay Waterway West Side Shoreline Protection

PROJECT LOCATION:

The project is located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the west bank of the Dupree Cut portion of Barataria Bay Waterway, north of the Lafitte Gas and Oil Field and south of the subsided land reclamation effort known as "the Pen". The project encompasses 1,789 acres of brackish marsh and open-water habitat on the west bank of the Barataria Bay Waterway.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The banks of Dupree Cut have deteriorated considerably due to erosion from vessel wakes. Large breaches have exposed adjacent marsh to increased water exchange and rapid changes in salinity. Approximately 1,500 acres of emergent marsh have been converted to open water with the advancement of marine processes. The project objective is to rebuild the west bank of the Dupree Cut to protect the adjacent marsh from unnatural water exchange and subsequent erosion. A rock dike was constructed along 9,400 linear feet of the west bank of the Barataria Bay Waterway.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 24-Sep-2002 )

The project is being coordinated with the COE dredging program. Contract advertised December 1999. Construction complete. Dedication ceremony held October 20, 2000. O&M plan signed July 15, 2002.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $3,405,167 , which includes $2,135,773 for construction first costs, and $131,332 and $1,138,062 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
