Louisiana Wildlife Federation to Host NGO/Agency Meeting to Discuss Post “Spill” Volunteer Habitat Recovery and Restoration Opportunities

The Louisiana Wildlife Federation is convening a meeting of natural resource management agencies engaged in oil “spill” response efforts and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) with the capacity to deliver a volunteer work force to assist agencies with these efforts Tuesday, August 31 at 10 a.m. in the Community Conference Room at Cabela’s Outdoor Outfitters in Gonzales.

The goal of the meeting is to identify and develop future volunteer opportunities as oil clean up and coastal restoration efforts move forward along Louisiana’s coast.

Thousands of concerned citizens have stepped forward to volunteer in South Louisiana over the past five years to help with hurricane and oil recovery, beach cleanups and coastal restoration efforts. That spirit of community involvement and volunteerism will continue to be an essential element of the efforts to restore Louisiana’s coastal ecosystems and protect wildlife, fisheries and coastal communities.

Agencies invited to participate include the US Fish & Wildlife Service, NOAA Fisheries Service; Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Park Service, the Breaux Act Task Force, LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection & Restoration and Louisiana Office of State Parks.

NGOs thus far who have confirmed participation include the Louisiana and National Wildlife Federations, National Audubon Society, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, Bayou Rebirth, Common Ground Relief, Sierra Club, and others.

NGOs and natural resources management agencies who would like to participate should contact Randy Lanctot at randy@lawildlifefed.org; 225-344-6762.
