A BioBlitz is a 24-hour event in which teams of volunteer scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, microbes, fungi, or other organisms as possible. National Geographic is helping conduct a BioBlitz in a different national park each year during the decade leading up to the Park Service Centennial in 2016. Every BioBlitz so far has found a species new to science, and the events spur new academic and research connections. There will also be a Biodiversity Festival with family activities, live music, and more. The public components of the event are a wonderful opportunity to do strategic outreach and develop new park lovers. Set in the greater New Orleans area, it only makes sense to also play up the cultural heritage of the area and ask local musicians and craftspeople to join us.
