CWPPRA Task Force Approves New 20 Year Life Decision Matrix
The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) Task Force is pleased to announce that several of its Louisiana wetland restoration projects have been built for 20 years and these projects are nearing the culmination of their intentioned initial duration. The CWPPRA Technical Committee and CWPPRA Planning & Evaluation Subcommittee have developed a formal decision matrix to assess each individual project as it nears the completion of its lifespan.
During the recent CWPPRA Task Force meeting held in Lafayette, LA the two aforementioned committees shared their recent "20-Year Life Decision Matrix" with the public and Task Force. The new matrix was reviewed by the public, accepted unanimously by the CWPPRA Task Force, and can be viewed here. Additionally, during the meeting the community evaluated and discussed the first two projects nearing their 20-year lives as well as other projects to demonstrate that the matrix can be used for all four of the different 20-year life options: extension of project life, close out, transfer of responsibility, and close out with removal of features. The Task Force considered the Technical Committee's recommendation to approve the path forward for the Bayou LaBranche Wetland Creation (PO-17) and Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge (ME-09) projects. The Bayou LaBranche Wetland Creation (PO-17) project was approved for project close out. The Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge (ME-09) project was approved to for close out with the remaining funds of about $175,000 to be returned to the CWPPRA program in 2014.
