Position Description

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) is a non-profit organization that has been working to restore and protect a sustainable coastal Louisiana for over 25 years. One way that CRCL accomplishes its mission is through its Habitat Restoration Program which works to restore coastal habitat by engaging and educating volunteers in a variety of wetland restoration projects. Since 2000, CRCL's Restoration Program has recruited over 10,000 volunteers to help restore 3,900 acres of coastal habitat.

CRCL is looking for a passionate, motivated, and organized individual to serve as the Restoration Program Outreach and Development Assistant for the Restoration Program. This is an AmeriCorps position that will be housed in the CRCL office. The Restoration Program Outreach and Development Assistant will work directly under the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana's (CRCL) Restoration Program Director, Hilary Collis, to develop wetland restoration projects that will help restore/protect a portion of Louisiana's coast, engage volunteers in innovative hands-on restoration projects, and engage communities in environmental leadership. The applicant will also work with other members of CRCL staff to help with other CRCL programming focused on protecting and restoring coastal Louisiana.

The Member will tasked with assisting in the following four categories:
  • Volunteer Engagement - The member will assist the CRCL Volunteer Coordinator develop and implement monthly volunteer-based restoration projects at sites across the state. The member will be responsible to help promote events, recruit volunteers, prepare for a volunteer event, participate in the event, and help with event follow up. Volunteer events range from beach cleanups, to marsh plantings, to post-project monitoring trips.
  • Technology and Social Media - The member will assist the post Habitat Program-related information to the CRCL Facebook page, uploading and editing photographs, and updating the restoration "project map" that highlights past and future projects on an interactive map on the CRCL web page (www.crcl.org).
  • Program Outreach - The Member will design and implement materials that will help increase the visibility of the Restoration Program. This could include creating updated informational brochures about the variety of programs that CRCL offers, designing an informational booth that can be used at public events, and creating an annual outreach plan.
  • Program Development - The Member will also assist with developing and maintaining Restoration Program monitoring policies. The Member will assist in the development of program tracking systems that will facilitate long-term programmatic success.
Essential Functions of Position:
  • Work with CRCL's Habitat Restoration Program staff to help expand program capacity to implement wetland restoration programs across the coast of Louisiana.
  • Increase the reach of the program by developing new marking and outreach materials, monitor program success, and by providing content to be uploaded to the CRCL website and social media outlets.
  • Assist the CRCL Volunteer Coordinator recruit volunteers to participate in wetland restoration projects.
    • Help prepare for volunteer-based restoration projects at sites across the coast of Louisiana.
    • Attend and assist at all volunteer-based restoration projects.
    • Help monitor past restoration projects to report on their status.
    • Assist with volunteer management and recognition.
    • Help maintain all equipment used in restoration projects.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • An interest in wetland restoration and/or volunteer outreach programs.
    • Some wetland/environmental science background is helpful but not required.
    • Applicant must be able to grasp basic ecological principles and be able to explain them to others.
  • Enthusiastic - must have a desire to play a positive role within the community and have excellent social and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated
    • The applicant must be comfortable working without constant supervision. This includes (but is not limited to) being willing to organize community restoration events, developing new outreach materials, and exploring opportunities that increase his/her general knowledge of Louisiana's wetlands.
  • By physically able and willing to handle heavy work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Be able to work in an office.
  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written).
    • Experience working with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Detail orientated and able to manage time appropriately.
Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferably in an ecological or communications field).
  • Previous work experience in an environmental field, communications, and/or volunteer management is preferred but not expected.
Additional Info:
  • Travel and overnight stay across the coast for this position is required.
    • Mileage reimbursement and per diem expenses will be covered.
    • Applicant must have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle.
  • Some weekend work is required.
