Bayou Vermilion, Our Working River



The Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association is hosting a symposium on September 10 -12 for the public, Bayou Vermilion, Our Working River. Opportunities for Conservation, Management and Development of the river will be discussed. The event includes a sunset cruise on Thursday, a day of speakers from 8:30 – 3:00 at Vermilionville on Friday and family fun activities on Saturday. Registration and information can be found online at www.bayouvermilionpreservation.org. Dr. Ernest Girouard, Coordinator of the Louisiana Master Farmer Program serves as Symposium Chair. Dr. Robert Thomas, Director of Center for Environmental Communication at Loyola University and key note speaker will talk about Our Love, Fascination, and Dreams for Rivers and Bayous. Other highlighted speakers are Donald Sagrera, Kevin Norton, Amanda Vincent and Ron Boustany. A panel from four parishes on tourism opportunities on the river will be moderated by Dr. David Cheramie and a panel featuring experts on Agriculture, Navigation and Economic Development will be moderated by Rebecca Triche. Also during the water weekend the public will be invited to participate in the BVPA’s Iris Project - the fall planting of Louisiana Iris in public places and in private yards to beautify Acadiana and to slow and absorb storm water along our bayous, streams and rivers.
