COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 19-Apr-2024

Lake Salvador Shore Protection Demo COMPLETE

PROJECT LOCATION:

The project is located along the north Lake Salvador shoreline, bounded to the east by Baie du Chactas and to the west by Bayou des Allemandes on the St. Charles-Lafourche parish lines.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This area has suffered from high rates of land loss caused by shoreline erosion along Lake Salvador. The project is designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of four separate types of segmented breakwaters in highly organic, unconsolidated soil with poor load bearing capacities. The project will maintain or recreate (with sediment input from the Federally authorized Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion project) the historical shoreline along this section of the lake and re-establish the historical hydrology of the interior marsh to reduce tidal scour and associated land loss.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 28-Mar-2002 )

Phase 1 was completed September 1997. Phase 2 is shoreline protection between Bayou desAllemnands and Lake Salvador. Construction began in April 1998 and completed in June 1998. Final first costs have been finalized. Closed out cooperative agreement between NOAA and LADNR. First costs accounting undersay. Project has served its demonstration purpose and is being removed by DNR with O&M funds, summer of 2002.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $2,801,782 , which includes $2,421,519 for construction first costs, and $88,809 and $291,455 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
