Hydrologic Restoration & Vegetative Planting in the Lac des Allemands Swamp

PROJECT LOCATION:

St. James Parish.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Area of benefit is located in St. James Parish, bordered by Bayou Chevreuil to the south and LA Highway 20 to the west. Project was rescoped in 2013. Original project included a freshwater diversion/siphon from the Mississippi River into northwest Barataria Basin wetlands, with gapping of spoil banks, placement of culverts under LA20, and planting of cypress and tupelo trees. Rescoped project is similar but the freshwater diversion/siphon feature has been removed to focus on the hydrological and vegetative features. Rescoped project will not include additional culverts. Project will include gap excavation to relieve impoundment, tree planting, and nutria and tallow control.
