PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 21-Nov-2024
Sabine Refuge Marsh Creation, Cycle 1
PROJECT LOCATION:
The project is located in the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, west of LA Highway 27, in large open water areas north and northwest of Brown's Lake in Cameron Parish, LA.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is intended to strategically create marsh in large, open water areas to block wind-induced saltwater introduction and freshwater loss. Additionally, it will increase nourishment in adjacent marshes while reducing open water fetch and erosion of marsh fringe.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 02-Mar-2004 )
This project was approved by the Task Force as a part of Priority Project List 8. The project consists of constructing 5 marsh creation sites within the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge using material dredged out of the Calcasieu River Ship Channel. The current estimated project cost to construct all cycles is approximately $21.4 million. The first cycle was completed on February 26, 2002. The total project cost for dredging cycle 1 was $3,412,415. The project was advertised for bid as a component of the Calcasieu River and Pass Maintenance Dredging contract on February 16, 2001. Construction initiation was advanced in conjunction with an accelerated maintenance dredging schedule for the Calcasieu River. On January 28, 2004 the CWPPRA Task Force provided additional funding and construction approval for Cycles 2 and 3. Cycle 2 is currently scheduled to be constructed in 2005. Cycle 3 would be constructed in 2006.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $3,613,164 , which includes $3,394,761 for construction first costs, and $160,378 and $58,025 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
