Sabine Refuge Marsh Creation, Cycles 4 & 5

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Sabine Marsh Creation Cycle 4 Project is located on the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, west of Highway 27, in a large, open water area northwest of Brown's Lake. It is located in Cameron Parish.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Cycles 4 & 5 consist of the creation of 230 and 232 acres (respectively) of brackish marsh platform using material dredged from the Calcasieu River Ship Channel. Approximately 2 million cubic yards of material was placed within each of two marsh creation areas. The dredged material was contained by earthen dikes and low level earthen overflow weirs that when constructed assist in the de-watering of the marsh creation disposal area. This also assist in the creation of fringe marsh through the overflow. The dredged slurry will be placed between elevations 2.0 and 2.7 feet North American Vertical Datum 88.

The current project estimate is $6,374,607 , which includes $5,829,286 for construction first costs, and $273,806 and $271,515 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
