PROJECT LOCATION:

The project location is the entire Louisiana coastal zone, but the primary nutria damage area is in the deltaic plain.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The project will reduce nutria damage to wetlands by providing increased economic incentives to trappers. The project will attempt to create a market for nutria meat for human consumption, ultimately increasing the price paid to trappers. CWPPRA funds will be used to increase the price paid to trappers for nutria meat brought to participating meat processing plants. Other project components include public information, recipe development and the development of an advertising and marketing strategy focused on increasing public demand for nutria meat for human consumption..

Nutria Harvest Demonstration Project Status July 2005 From April through June 2003 the following activities were completed: Promotional Events: 1) Chef Parola demonstrated nutria meat preparation and organized judging for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers annual “Earth Day Celebration” in New Orleans, 2) LDWF assisted Chef Kevin Diez by providing nutria meat for the Baton Rouge Family Fun Fair, and 3) LDWF provided nutria sausage to the Opelousas Chamber of Commerce for a national cycling event. LDWF contracted with Firefly Digital to upgrade the Nutria Website “www.nutria.com” to be completed in September 2003. The upgrade will provide easier site navigational access and more accurate and rapid user information. This project was completed in October 2003. The project sponsors have completed project close-out activities.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $806,220 , which includes $651,945 for construction first costs, and $154,275 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
