PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 21-Nov-2024
Pecan Island Terracing
PROJECT LOCATION:
The project is located in Vermilion Parish approximately 5 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico just south of Pecan Island and Hwy 82.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The marshland was transformed into dry pasture land in the mid 1950's by constructing continuous dikes and pumping out the water. Deterioration and loss of the perimeter levees in recent years has converted the entire area into a shallow, open water lake with a few small marsh islands. The project will convert areas of open water back to vegetated marsh through the construction of earthen terraces. Project features include construction of earthen terraces over a substantial portion of the project area. Breaks will be constructed to facilitate sediment settling. Submerged aquatic vegetation growth will be promoted in the terraced area due to reduced turbidity and wave action.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 29-Apr-2011 )
An O&M inspection is planned for May 2011.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $2,485,502 , which includes $2,039,442 for construction first costs, and $246,054 and $200,006 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
