PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 06-Sep-2024
Venice Ponds Marsh Creation and Crevasses INACTIVE
PROJECT LOCATION:
The project is located in the Mississippi River Delta basin in Plaquemines Parish south of Venice, Louisiana, adjacent to the Tiger and Grand Passes.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Approximately 185 acres of marsh will be created in open water where wetlands once thrived. Fill material will be acquired from Grand and Tiger Passes using hydraulic dredging and constructing crevasses. Existing marsh boundaries will aid in retaining dredged material and re-establishing marsh habitat. The target elevation of the site after one year is between a maximum of +2.5 feet NAVD88 and a minimum of +0.5 feet NAVD88. The created marsh will allow flow on the east side of the site. Four existing crevasses off Tiger Pass that currently discharge into the project area will be improved by bifurcation dredging, which will entail splitting the crevasses' delivery channels into "Y" shapes to more closely mimic natural river processes. Three new crevasses will be created off Tiger Pass to convey the sediment-laden waters of Grand and Tiger Passes into the benefitted area.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 21-Jan-2013 )
Phase 2 funding was reqeusted, but not recommended, at the December 2012 Technical Committee Meeting. Sponsors will determine whether future Phase 2 requests will be made.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $611,222 , which includes $611,222 for construction first costs, and $0 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
