PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 19-Apr-2024

Bayou Bonfouca Marsh Creation

PROJECT LOCATION:

This project is located in Region 1, Upper Pontchartrain Basin, St. Tammany Parish, along the northern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain west of Eden Isles development near Bayou’s Bonfouca and Liberty. A portion of this project is also located within Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge adjacent to Bayou Bonfouca.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project would consist of placing hydraulically dredged sediment from Lake Pontchartrain in open water sites to a height of +1.1 NAVD 88. This would create 520 acres and nourish approximately 101 acres of emergent marsh. Several historic marsh ponds have been identified and would be restored. Tidal creeks are also proposed to connect these ponds to facilitate water and fisheries exchange. Containment dikes that would be sufficiently gaped or degraded to allow for fisheries access no later than three years post construction.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 12-Mar-2021 )

All construction has been completed for this project. A large O&M event was completed in February 2021 which included creating tidal creeks in each of the marsh creation units as well as dredging the created ponds located in marsh creation unit 2.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $27,832,629 , which includes $27,408,107 for construction first costs, and $204,356 and $220,166 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
