PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 03-Dec-2024
Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge Hydro Restoration, Phase 1
PROJECT LOCATION:
The project is located on the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Orleans Parish, LA, south of Lake Pontchartrain.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane Protection levee isolates units 3 and 4 of the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge from the surrounding marshes and establishes a large freshwater impoundment. The project features include the installation of two 30-inch diameter (22,000 gallon per minute) pumps one each in the North and South Units of the refuge. The pumping stations will remove excess water during the spring and summer high water periods. Larger pumping stations were installed by the Corps of Engineers in 2011 to accommodate enlargements to the New Orleans East hurricane protection levees. The 20-year project life ended in May 2016. In May 2014, the Task Force approved a 6-year no-cost extension to May 2022 due to in-operation of pumps post Hurricane Katrina.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 20-Aug-2024 )
This project has reached the end of its 20-year life and was closed out in May 2024.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $1,680,193 , which includes $975,501 for construction first costs, and $360,328 and $344,364 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
