Red Mud Demo DEAUTHORIZED
PROJECT LOCATION:
Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, Gramercy, St. James Parish, Louisiana.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The objective of this project was to demonstrate in the field that red mud industrial sediment by-product can provide a substrate suitable for creation of emergent marsh in a cost-effective and environmentally unobtrusive manner. Placement of red mud to create a brackish water marsh environment as designed in this demonstration project would provide a qualitative comparison of plant growth on various red mud applications, an indication of any potential ecological effects, and rates of sediment transport. Approximately 3 acres of brackish water wetlands wasl to be created with red mud at a test site in Gramercy, LA. The red mud was to be pumped from the plant, using existing pipes, to the test area. The application areas were separated by low levee or sill type structures or silt curtains.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 28-Mar-2002 )
Facility construction is essentially complete; project was put on hold pending resolution of cell contamination by saltwater before planting occurred and has subsequently been deauthorized. Demonstration cells completed; no vegetation installed. The Task Force approved the deauthorization of the project on August 7, 2001. Escrowed funds will be returned to Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $520,129 , which includes $459,705 for construction first costs, and $60,424 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
