PROJECT LOCATION:

The Chandeleur Islands are a 72 kilometer barrier island chain located in easternmost St. Bernard Parish, LA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This Chandeleur Islands have been battered by numerous hurricanes in recent years. The project goal is to plant 364 acres of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) on 22 shallow-water overwash areas along the Chandeleur barrier island chain to stabilize the islands, protect existing marsh and create an additional 73 acres of marsh habitat.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 28-Mar-2002 )

Cooperative Agreement was awarded September 10, 2000. Vegetative planting is scheduled for spring, 2001, and are phased over two years. Pilot planting project completed in June, 2000. First phase of vegetative plantings completed July 2001 with installation of approximately 80,000 smooth cordgrass plants along 6.6 miles of overwash fan perimeters. Project area is being evaluated for additional plantings in 2003.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $839,927 , which includes $665,664 for construction first costs, and $174,263 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
