PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 22-Nov-2024
West Belle Pass Headland Restoration COMPLETE
PROJECT LOCATION:
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Timbalier Bay is encroaching into the marshes on the west side of Bayou Lafourche, and wave action is eroding its banks. Openings in the banks are causing tidal scour in the interior marshes. The project will reduce the encroachment of Timbalier Bay into the marshes on the west side of Bayou Lafourche with the use of dedicated dredged materials to create 184 acres of marsh on the west side of Belle Pass. A water control structure will be placed in the Evans Canal, and plugs on other canals. Rip rap will be used on the west side of Belle Pass and Bayou Lafourche from the jetty north 17,000 feet. The rate of tidal exchange will be lessened, allowing new and existing marsh to stabilize; and shoreline erosion along the west banks of Bayou Lafourche and Belle Pass will be reduced.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 13-Jul-2016 )
Inspection of the TE-23 project was held on April 28, 2016. Attendees included Glen Curole and Benjamin Hartman of CPRA and Susan Hennington and Kaitlyn Carriere of USACE-MVN. Constructed features inspected included the vinyl bulkhead Closure #1, the rock shoreline protection and rock closures #4 & 5 along Bayou Lafourche and Belle Pass. Interior marsh areas were viewed from the project area perimeter; closures #2 & 3 were not included in the 2016 inspection due to their boat inaccessibility. Photographs were taken and copies are available upon request. Project is functioning as designed & meeting project goals. The 2016 OM&M report has recently been completed and will be available for review at the CWPPRA LaCoast.gov website.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $6,727,249 , which includes $6,186,194 for construction first costs, and $195,006 and $346,048 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
