Whiskey Island Back Barrier Marsh Creation
PROJECT LOCATION:
Whiskey Island, which is one of the five islands that comprise the Isles Dernieres barrier island chain, is located 18 miles southwest of Cocodrie in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. It is bounded by Coupe Colin to the west, Whiskey Pass to the east, Lake Pelto, Caillou Boca, and Caillou Bay to the north, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The objective of the Whiskey Island Back Barrier Marsh Creation Project (TE-50) is to demonstrate on a small scale the ability to create a back barrier marsh platform on which a barrier island can migrate. Proposed project goals are to construct a sand dune along the gulf side beach shore, to create approximately 300 acres of back barrier intertidal habitat, and to construct a minimum of 10,000 linear feet of tidal creeks and six 1-acre tidal ponds to allow hydraulic exchange and circulation within the new back barrier marsh. Project goals are also to increase the longevity of the previously restored and natural portions of the island by increasing the island’s width, to maintain the longevity of the island by conserving sand volume and elevation by increasing the islands width, and to vegetate the completed project with smooth cordgrass.

After further assessment of project vegetation, sponsors intend to pursue an additional vegetation planting event.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $26,154,787 , which includes $25,809,660 for construction first costs, and $239,446 and $105,681 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
