PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 21-Nov-2024
Enhancement of Barrier Island Vegetation Demo COMPLETE
PROJECT LOCATION:
To be determined.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is designed to address a critical need for cost-effective improvements to the effective spread of vegetative cover on barrier island restoration/creation projects so as to bolster island integrity during storm and overwash events. The goal is to further develop methods of establishing and growing vegetative plantings in dune, swale, and backbarrier marsh areas on a recently-created/restored barrier island. The project will be conducted in controlled settings at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and in field settings in coastal environments that have yet to be determined. A biotic component of the project will focus on novel establishment techniques of black mangrove and groundsel bush via propagules and seeds, respectively, as an alternative to planting container-grown seedlings. The project will also include a focus on properly amending the restored barrier island substrate with humic acid and/or a fertilizer regime to minimize environmental stressors and encourage survival, spread, and expansion of the vegetation.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 22-Jan-2013 )
A draft final report was received and reviewed, with minimal comments. Subsequently, a final report was completed.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $591,998 , which includes $487,257 for construction first costs, and $0 and $104,742 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
