PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 22-Nov-2024
Vermilion River Cutoff Bank Protection COMPLETE
PROJECT LOCATION:
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The revised project design includes protecting the east side of the Vermilion River Cutoff with rock to prevent further erosion; hardening the points on existing land bridges on the west bank of the Cutoff with rock; and constructing sediment trapping fences on the Vermilion Bay side to help stabilize and protect the land bridge from wave action in the Bay. The initial plan was revised when field investigations indicated that protection of the east bank of the Cutoff would best be accomplished with measures on the east bank; and that cutting off the west bank with a continuous dike would stop the flow of desirable nutrients and sediments from the Cutoff into Vermilion Bay through the breeches in the west bank land bridges.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 01-Jan-1990 )
The project was modified by moving the dike from the west to the east bank of the cutoff to better protect the wetlands. The need for the sediment retention fence on the west bank is still undetermined. The Task Force approved a revised project estimate of $2,500,000; however, current estimate is less. The Task Force approved a revised project estimate of $2,500,000; however, current estimate is less. Condemnation of real estate easements was required because of unclear ownership titles and significantly lengthened the project schedule. Construction was completed in February 1996. Complete.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $2,023,685 , which includes $1,695,284 for construction first costs, and $117,404 and $210,997 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
