COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 25-Apr-2024

Sediment Trapping at The Jaws

PROJECT LOCATION:

The project is located in St. Mary Parish near "The Jaws" in the northeast portion of West Cote Blanche Bay.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The area is experiencing shoreline erosion at the rate of 15 ft/yr, and available sediments from "The Jaws" are not being used to create vegetated marshes. The objective of the project is to induce sedimentation to create emergent vegetated wetlands by reducing wave fetch. The project components include: dredging 63,000 feet of distributary channels 60 feet wide and 6 feet deep (844,444 cy); constructing 145 terraces approximately 60 feet wide at an elevation of 2 feet above (+)MSL; and vegetative plantings on the terrace surfaces and between the terraces with Bullwhip and Giant Cutgrass.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 29-Apr-2011 )

An O&M inspection was conducted on 4-05-11. The overall condition of the terraces is good. Evidence of recovery from herbivory was noted, as was colonization of mud flats between terraces and bay shoreline.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $1,722,811 , which includes $1,248,498 for construction first costs, and $217,842 and $256,471 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
