PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 03-Dec-2024
East Marsh Island Marsh Creation
PROJECT LOCATION:
The project is located in Region 3, Teche/Vermilion Basin, Iberia Parish, east end of Marsh Island Wildlife Refuge, Southeast of Lake Sand.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Substantial areas of interior emergent marsh on Marsh Island have been converted to open water, primarily due to Hurricane Lili. Areas targeted by this project are those with the greatest historic land loss and within close proximity to East Cote Blanche Bay. Marsh creation was initially planned behind the existing two easternmost rock dikes constructed as part of the TV-14 project but was dropped from the project due to costs. The goal of the project is to create approximately 165 acres of marsh and nourish an additional 197 acres of interior emergent marsh with hydraulically dredged material from East Cote Blanche Bay. After construction, the newly created marsh areas will be planted with native vegetation such as smooth cordgrass, marshhay cordgrass, and saltgrass.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 23-May-2011 )
Construction of marsh creation has been completed. Vegetative Plantings began March 2011, expected to be completed by July 2011.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $18,173,327 , which includes $15,791,731 for construction first costs, and $272,501 and $2,109,095 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
