Habitat Restoration Coordinator

Position Description


The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to drive bold, science-based action to rebuild coastal Louisiana through outreach, restoration, and advocacy. CRCL unites business leaders, scientists, landowners, national and local conservation groups, government agencies, hunters, anglers, and a broad spectrum of concerned citizens to advance restoration of a sustainable coastal Louisiana. CRCL is seeking a Coordinator for its Habitat Restoration Program. The Coordinator will build support for coastal restoration by providing opportunities for volunteers to participate in on-the-ground habitat restoration work such as dune restoration on the Cameron shoreline, marsh plantings in Vermilion Parish, and coastal forest restoration on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Since 2000, CRCL’s Restoration Program has recruited over 12,000 volunteers to help restore 4,500 acres of coastal habitat. The Coordinator will lead the planning and execution of events engaging 600+ people annually.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan, manage and coordinate 10-25 volunteer restoration project events annually.
  • Identify potential project sites and partners including landowners, state/federal agencies, local governments, private foundations, and NGO’s.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel prior to and following volunteer events.
  • Recruit volunteer groups and individuals.
  • Train and supervise volunteers at the restoration site and recognize volunteer contributions following events.
  • Ensure events provide safe, positive, and high-quality volunteer experiences.
  • Adhere to volunteer recruitment, training, and management protocols to help CRCL connect with strategic groups and increase the base of active volunteers.
  • Maintain volunteer database and project maps.
  • Manage, prepare, and present project data (number of plants, acres restored, number of volunteers) for outreach and reporting purposes.
  • Secure funding to maintain the program in partnership with the Restoration Programs Director.
  • Assist in developing a monitoring program in partnership with other staff.
  • Contribute to CRCL’s website and social media to promote restoration.
  • Represent CRCL at meetings with state/federal agencies, conferences, and outreach events.
  • Participate in the planning of CRCL’s biennial State of the Coast conference, and assist with other special events, workshops, and field trips.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree, preferably in an ecological field, environmental science, natural resource management or related field; or can demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully execute the position
  • General knowledge of and interest in estuarine ecology and Louisiana’s coastal land loss issues
  • Familiarity with coastal restoration and protection projects across Louisiana a plus
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to self-direct work to accomplish goals
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously with little supervision
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and timelines
  • Comfort and experience with field work in coastal environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with internal and external partners to execute projects as a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and demonstrated ability to learn new software
  • Interest in, and preferably working knowledge of, GIS
  • Experience leading/managing groups and comfort with public speaking a plus
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends – frequent weekend travel is required
  • Ability to travel to meetings and restoration project sites across Louisiana
  • Must be able to walk through marsh ecosystems while carrying up to 30 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable transportation
  • Ability to operate a towing vehicle, boat, 4-wheeler and/or other field equipment is a plus
  • Positive, solution-oriented, practical approach to natural resource management
