COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 21-Oct-2019

South Lake Lery Shoreline and Marsh Restoration

PROJECT LOCATION:

The project area is located in Region 2, within the Breton Sound Basin portion of Plaquemines Parish. The project is specifically located within the Caernarvon mapping unit near the town of Delacroix southeast of New Orleans.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project would be described as a marsh creation and shoreline restoration project. The marsh creation aspect of the project will have a hydraulic dredge extract material from the Lake Lery water bottom and pump that material into contained marsh creation cells located south and west of the southern and western Lake Lery shorelines. This will create and/or nourish approximately 642 acres of intertidal intermediate marsh. The shoreline restoration component of the project would have a barge-mounted dragline excavating material from the bottom of Lake Lery and placing that material along the southern and western shorelines. This restored shoreline would have a 50 foot crown width and be built to a height considered high intertidal marsh. The lake side shoreline would have a 4:1 sideslope which would be planted with smooth cordgrass and bullwhip. Marsh created along the shoreline would be 43 acres for a project total of 688 acres of created/restored marsh.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 29-Sep-2017 )

All earth work associated with the Lake Rim Embankments (LRE) or Shoreline Restoration has been completed. All LRE have been planted with bullwhip (intertidal) and bermuda and brown top millet (crown). There are some concerns with the amount of erosion associated with LRE 1 and 6. Currently CPRA/FWS/NRCS are evaluating if/what additional work will be needed on those reaches to address the erosion. All marsh creation has been completed. Additional marsh has been created south of marsh creation units 2,3, and 4. Waiting on final as-builts from NRCS.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $32,295,816 , which includes $32,188,347 for construction first costs, and $73,203 and $34,266 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
